I did start on Doris Chan's cardi yesterday:
I got to the 3rd/4th row on the yoke (this is crocheted in her usual top-down format) and that's where I was stopped.
I swear I looked at the instructions & what I was crocheting for an hour, trying to figure out what the heck I was supposed to do. I know exactly how to do the straight lace portion, but these are her increase rows and something isn't right.
I can see enough of one shoulder in the picture to make me think I can change the pattern & make it work. However, I figured out enough last night to realize I'll have to change more than one row - ie. it's not just one row that has a mistake or typo, the following rows match what you were supposed to do (and can't!) on row 3.
I'll admit I was pretty tired last night. I might be missing something painfully obvious so today (once again) I have just a half day job. If I get my afternoon, I'll come home & try the instructions one more time with fresh eyes. I may try the pattern with a lighter yarn, too, to make it easier to see the set up on each row.
Everyone cross your fingers that it was user error last night & not pattern error! Because I'd really like to have this cardi - and maybe make one or two as gifts!
In other news, a friend of DH's is about to have a baby any day now. Yesterday he asked me "how hard" it would be to make a baby blanket or something.
I said, "Pretty darn hard." ::wink::
I figure I can make that garter sweater & booties set I saw in Knit Simple:
I tend to make baby items on the large size because they grow so fast but heck - this sweater & booties will be perfect for NM spring weather. It's a boy too. What do you want to bet I can find some blue CE on my shelves? :::Grin:::
I'll get started on this today - get ready for some instant knitting gratification!
Good luck on the Cardi-last night I started something, started it 4 times to get gauge mind you and I think there's an error. I searched the internet, found lots of remarks about errors in the "Amazing Lace Crochet" book-no correction or errata sheet-even a site where Doris Chan said "To err is human" and to "follow the chart, not the words"-aarch-I still want this book, but wish it had an errata sheet (library book for now).
Oddly also, I received an email from my mother-baby shower on March 4th-2 boys, can you make two sweaters, booties and matching blankets-LOL-I told her "Good luck on that, I can't even get the blanket edging done on fleece I bought weeks ago for a shower I have for twins this weekend".

Bron you are such a fast knitter, you could have the sweater & booties done in less than a day!
It is nice to have more than a few days' notice though!
Have a great day everyone!

Wouldn't you know it? The one thing I'd picked from the book that I just had to try is giving you problems. Can you hear me sobbing?

I want to make that cardi too. It's really cute, and I think Cotton Ease will work nicely for those baby sweaters and booties.

No worries! I figured it out! Whew! The instructions were just crap, that's all. ::wink:: Details tomorrow!
I have a baby sweater to start. ::wink::

Hey Bron - I sent an email to what I think is your address about the Owl Sweater. Let me know if you don't get it!

Pattern errors I think they're part of determining whether or not the pattern is rated easy, intermediate or advanced. It's not the garment so much as trying to figure out where the pattern instructions are going. It makes me mad, especially when you shell out some bucks. Glad you were able to figure it out; let us know what you did, ok!

Does the designer have an email address?
I like the baby things. I might have to do that. My cousin is having a baby soon and I started a sweater for him, but I don't like how it is turning out. It is just too girly. I also am unsure about my yarn choice.

The baby things are really sweet and should definitely give you an instant gratification hit. Shame about the cardi. Fingers crossed for you that it isn't an error in the pattern. If you still think it is, could you contact the magazine and ask? I got a great response from the Jo Sharp people when I contacted them with a query about yarn and pattern. Could be worth a try if you really really want to make the cardi.
